Compounding at Opal

Medicine made to fit you.

When the commercial version doesn't work — wrong dose, wrong form, an allergy to a filler, or a medication that's simply unavailable — we make it from scratch. Compounding is where pharmacy gets personal, and it's at the heart of what we do.

Our practice

A compounding lab, run like a craft.

Every compound we make starts with a conversation — with you, and often with your prescriber. We talk through the goal, the options, and the trade-offs before a single ingredient is weighed.

We prepare non-sterile compounds on-site to NAPRA standards: creams and ointments, capsules, oral suspensions, troches, and more. Ingredients are sourced from licensed suppliers with certificates of analysis on file, every preparation is documented and beyond-use dated, and our pharmacist checks each formula against the latest evidence and stability data. Nothing leaves the bench until it's right.

Areas we compound

The needs we hear most often.

A closer look at the compounding we're asked for week in, week out — always alongside your prescriber.

01

Pain management

Topical and transdermal pain compounds deliver medication straight to the site that hurts, often with fewer of the whole-body side effects that come with oral painkillers. Working from your prescriber's plan, we combine the right actives at the right strengths in a cream or gel built for your situation — whether that's joint pain, nerve pain, or muscle and soft-tissue discomfort. Chat with our compounding pharmacist for options to discuss with your prescriber.

02

Hormone replacement therapy (BHRT)

Working from your prescriber's plan, we prepare bioidentical hormone replacement therapy in custom-dosed capsules, creams, and troches when a commercial product isn't a suitable fit — for example a strength or form that isn't commercially available. Each preparation is made fresh and documented batch to batch for consistency. Whether compounded hormone therapy is right for you is a decision for you and your prescriber; we're glad to discuss the options. Often part of perimenopause and menopause care.

03

Pediatric compounding

We make medication easier to give — child-appropriate strengths, dye- and allergen-free options, and flavours that take the fight out of dosing. Liquid suspensions, suppositories, gummies, and gentle topicals mean the dose your prescriber intended is the dose that actually gets taken.

Dermatology & skin care

When off-the-shelf strengths or bases don't cut it, custom dermatology compounds can. We prepare combination creams, custom-strength topicals, and vehicles suited to sensitive skin — for acne, pigmentation, rosacea, and scarring — always in step with your prescriber. For non-prescription routines, see our custom skin-care blends.

05

Allergen avoidance

Many commercial medications carry fillers, dyes, gluten, lactose, or preservatives that some patients simply can't tolerate. We can often recreate a medication free of the specific ingredient you need to avoid — the same active your prescriber ordered, without the trigger.

Gluten-free Dye-free Lactose-free Preservative-free
06

Discontinued & back-ordered meds

When a medication you rely on is pulled from the market or stuck on back-order, we can frequently recreate it from its active ingredient — keeping your therapy going while commercial supply is uncertain. Bring us the details and we'll tell you honestly whether it's possible.

How it works

From prescription to pickup.

Every compound follows the same careful path — so you always know what's happening and why.

01

Talk it through

Bring your prescription or your question. We review the goal with you — and your prescriber if needed — and confirm what's possible.

02

Quote & confirm

We give you the formulation, price, and timing up front. Nothing is made until you've said yes.

03

Made fresh on-site

Your compound is prepared by hand to NAPRA standards, documented with a master formula record, and checked by a pharmacist.

04

Pickup or delivery

Collect it at the counter or have it delivered free within the local area — clearly labelled with storage and beyond-use dating.

Forms we make

One medication, many shapes.

The right form can be the difference between a dose that gets taken and one that doesn't. We prepare medications in whichever form fits your life.

Hormones

BHRT, explained: what compounding can and can't do

Compounding FAQ

Questions, answered.

What is a compounding pharmacy?
A compounding pharmacy prepares custom medications from individual ingredients when a commercial product doesn't fit — for example a different strength, a liquid or flavoured form, an allergen-free version, or a medication that's been discontinued. Opal prepares non-sterile compounds on-site to NAPRA standards.
Can you compound medication for my pet?
Yes. We compound veterinary medications in flavoured suspensions, transdermal gels, tiny custom doses, chews, and capsules. Bring your veterinarian's prescription or request a quote first.
Do I need a prescription for a compounded medication?
Most compounded medications require a prescription from your physician, nurse practitioner, or veterinarian. We're happy to discuss options and provide a quote before you commit — just ask our compounding pharmacist.
How long does a compounded prescription take?
Most non-sterile compounds are made fresh to order, often the same day. We confirm the formulation, price, and timing with you up front, then offer pickup or free local delivery.
